Santa Monica is the easiest coastal day trip from anywhere in LA, and also the easiest one to get wrong. Most visitors spend their whole visit on the pier, eat overpriced funnel cake, and never see the parts of the neighborhood that make people who live there actually love it.
The pier is the appetizer
Santa Monica Pier is worth an hour — the Pacific Park Ferris wheel, the arcade, the view down the coast — but it's a warm-up, not the meal. The real draw is what's on either side of it: the beach itself, and the Santa Monica State Beach bike path, which runs unbroken for miles in both directions.
Rent a bike or just walk it south toward Venice Boardwalk for people-watching that's unlike anywhere else in the country, or north toward the quieter sand near Palisades Park, a bluff-top strip of green with unbroken ocean views and none of the crowds.
Third Street and beyond
The Third Street Promenade, three pedestrian-only blocks of shops and restaurants a few minutes' walk from the pier, is worth an hour for browsing and street performers. For dinner with an actual view, walk to Ocean Avenue — several restaurants there have patios looking straight down the bluff to the water.
Less obvious: Montana Avenue, ten minutes north, is where Santa Monica residents actually shop — boutiques and cafés with none of the tourist markup, and easy parking most days.
The pier is the postcard. The bike path is where the day actually happens.
Timing the beach lots
Santa Monica's beach parking lots fill by 11am most weekends and stay full until late afternoon — the single biggest complaint visitors have about the neighborhood. Street parking inland is metered and scarce. This is the one LA neighborhood where a waiting chauffeur pays for itself almost immediately: no circling, no lot fee, and no walking six blocks back from where you eventually found a spot.
Best time to go
Weekday mornings are close to empty. If a weekend is your only option, arrive before 10am or after 4pm — the lots turn over quickly once the afternoon crowd starts leaving. Sunset at the pier or along Palisades Park is worth planning around; it's one of the better ocean sunsets in the county and costs nothing to see.
